PITTSBURGH-Charlene Newkirk, president of the Community College of Allegheny County's South Campus and Washington County Center, has been appointed to the Jefferson Hospital Board of Directors. The board is made up of volunteers who represent a broad cross-section of the communities and constituents served by the hospital.

Newkirk is pleased to join in the mission of Jefferson Hospital, which, she said, offers a wide range of high quality and affordable health care services, works diligently to keep patients healthy and has a long history of meeting the needs of the region's diverse populations.

"This appointment is a great honor for me, and my membership on the Jefferson Hospital Board of Directors is a significant highpoint in my service to the community where I grew up," said Newkirk. "The hospital and its staff have demonstrated a continuing commitment to the health and wellbeing of all people in our region for more than 50 years."

A native of Pittsburgh, Newkirk graduated from Westinghouse High School in 1969, received a BA in English from Oberlin College in 1974 and a JD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1978. She passed the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania bar examination in 1978 and actively practiced law for several years prior to entering the field of higher education administration.

Newkirk has been with CCAC since March 2009. She previously served as vice president and dean of the Prince Frederick Campus of the College of Southern Maryland. In addition, she has served as a member of Middle States reaccreditation teams, as a Baldrige-trained examiner team member for the Maryland Performance Excellence Awards program and as a grant reviewer for the U.S. Department of Education.

Last year, Newkirk received a 2017 Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction at the 99th annual Phi Theta Kappa "Catalyst" Convention. She was among 19 college presidents and campus CEOs from across the nation who were selected for this award based on their outstanding efforts toward promoting the goals of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
