PITTSBURGH-The Community College of Allegheny County's Nursing program will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first graduating class in 1969 with a fundraising brunch on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019. The event, held in conjunction with the CCAC Educational Foundation, will take place in the Auditorium lobby of the Foerster Student Services Center on Allegheny Campus from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Alumni and faculty from all 50 years of the program are invited. Graduates of the first class will be honored and will receive a commemorative gift.

Among the speakers will be Professor Mary Jane M. Smith, MSN, MA, RN-BC, who was a faculty member in 1969 and continues to teach at the college. Smith will speak about her recollections of the first class and how the college and the program have changed over the past five decades. Following the brunch, attendees will have the opportunity to tour the 7th floor of Milton Hall, which now houses the Allegheny Campus Nursing program, where they will be able to view the state-of-the-art Simulation Lab and other program features.

The brunch menu will include baked French toast, assorted quiches, broccoli salad, herbed potatoes, dessert, mimosas, coffee, tea and juice. Cost is $50 per person, with half that amount going toward the Nursing Alumni Scholarship fund. The goal is to reach $10,000 to establish an endowed scholarship that will continue to benefit CCAC Nursing students for years to come.

The program is indeed worth celebrating-CCAC is ranked the third best Associate Degree Nursing program in the state in terms of National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) scores-95.16% of CCAC graduates pass the NCLEX on the first attempt, which is 9.63% higher than the national mean for all associate degree programs. The program boasts other impressive statistics, including producer of the greatest number of Registered Nurses in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Seating for the event is limited, and the deadline to RSVP is Sept. 6. Free on-site parking will be available. To RSVP or to make a donation to the CCAC Nursing Alumni Scholarship fund, go here.
